Mendelssohn  The Hebrides Overture, "Fingal's Cave"
Bruch Scottish Fantasy for Violin and Orchestra
Tchaikovsky Symphony  No. 4

Mendelssohn jotted down the first measures of what would become his Hebrides Overture upon visiting the archipelago of the same name on the west coast of Scotland. This moody and evocative overture suggests the majesty and mystery of Fingal's Cave. Bruch's rapturous and melodic Scottish Fantasy is based on Scottish folk tunes and is filled with all the drama of the land and its people. After recovering from a breakdown in the late 1870's, Tchaikovsky's creative floodgates opened in a period of intense creative activity, giving us his masterful opera Eugene Onegin, the Violin Concerto, the Fourth Symphony and Capriccio italien. The Fourth Symphony has been called one of the most towering structures in our whole literature, with its pent-up, explosive passion. Tickets: $58, $55, $45, $35, $25 and $18.
