Messiaen Un sourire, Hommage à Mozart W. A. Mozart Symphony No. 38 in D Major, "Prague" Khatchaturian Violin Concerto Smetana "The Moldau"
The Marriage of Figaro was wildly popular in Prague when Mozart visited the Golden City in late 1786 and early 1787. His Symphony No. 38 is a dramatic and sophisticated work, filled with the kind of verve and élan that we have come to love from this beloved master, notable for its intensity of expression and rousing finale. Messiaen's Un sourire (A smile) is a brief, gentle tone poem written on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of Mozart's death. It is meant as a tribute to Mozart's jubilant attitude toward life. Baiba Skride performs the exotic violin concerto of Aram Khatchaturian with its folk-inspired rhythms, high-flying virtuosity and yearning melodic intensity. Smetana's "The Moldau" is an evocative, sweeping depiction of the great Bohemian river. Tickets: $58, $55, $45, $35, $25 and $18.
