Grieg wrote 66 miniature Lyric Pieces for solo piano. Four of these he orchestrated into his rustic and pastoral Lyric Suite. Despite its allusions to Mozart's C Minor Piano Concerto, Beethoven's tense and dramatic Third Piano Concerto bridges the divide between his earlier concertos and his later, more mature concertos. Originally composed during the first year of his marriage to Clara Wieck, Schumann shelved this symphony after its first performance was coolly received. Ten years later he revised the piece into its present and final version displaying a pensive and almost yearning quality, conveying a sense of solemn grandeur.
