Guest conductor Larry Rachleff leads the Symphony in this colorful program beginning with Berlioz's flashy overture with its dazzling orchestration and vivid imagery. Argentine pianist and rising star Ingrid Fliter performs Ravel's sophisticated G Major Concerto with its brilliantly percussive passages and melodies with more than a hint of a jazz inflection. Barber's luminous and ravishing Adagio for Strings continues the program. Elgar's Enigma Variations, an instant success upon its 1899 premiere, is characterized by a noble theme and 14 variations in which the composer musically portrays his wife and their close friends.
