Dukas The Sorcerer's Apprentice Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 3 R. Strauss Also sprach Zarathustra
"For too long we have dreamt music, now let us awake..." So begins the heading of Richard Strauss's 1896 tone poem, Also sprach Zarathustra, based on Nietzsche's philosophical work - fervent to fiery and turbulent to mystical. The Sorcerer's Apprentice was originally composed as a teaching exercise in how not to write a scherzo, although many link it to a certain animated mouse, conjuring magic beyond his skill while becoming mired in mayhem. 2009 Van Cliburn Competition co-winner Haochen Zhang brings his youthful energy to Prokofiev's kinetic, lyrically attractive and playful Third Piano Concerto. Sponsored by the Almy Legacy Fund. Tickets: $58, $55, $45, $35, $25 and $18.
*This concert will be performed at Yardley Hall in The Carlsen Center at Johnson County Community College, College Blvd. and Quivira Road, Overland Park, KS
