Giménez Interlude from La boda de Luis Alonso Roberto Sierra Sinfonia No. 4 Shostakovich Cello Concerto No. 2 Ravel Rapsodie espagnole
Join the Symphony for an evening of beautiful folk-inspired music. Giménez's "interlude" is a brief, colorful work inspired by the zarzuelas of Spain. The Sinfonia No. 4 of American composer Roberto Sierra is engagingly vibrant and colorful, fusing classical forms with Latin American idioms. Alisa Weilerstein brings her natural virtuosity and expressive range to Shostakovich's dark and introspective Cello Concerto No. 2. As a child, Ravel's mother would sing to him folk songs from her native Spain. The beautiful and evocative Rapsodie espagnole reflects the profound influence of his Spanish musical heritage. Tickets: $58, $55, $45, $35, $25 and $18.
There is also a Sunday, January 30 performance at 2 p.m. at The Danny and Willa Ellis Family Fine Arts Center at Fort Scott Community College in Fort Scott, Kan. Call 1-620-223-2700, ext. 515 for tickets to the Fort Scott performance.
