First Violin
Tomoko Iguchi
Before moving to Kansas City, she was a member of the New World Symphony in Miami Beach, Florida under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas. During her time in the New World Symphony, she toured the United States, Monaco, Israel, Brazil, and Argentina.
She has been a member of the Kansas City Symphony since 1995. She has participated in the Evian Music Festival, Pablo Casals Music Festival, Ojai Music Festival, Music at Penn’s Woods, Colorado Music Festival, and she has been member of the Grand Teton Music Festival in Wyoming since 2002. She has performed with the newEar Contemporary Chamber Ensemble in Kansas City, and with Solistas Mexico Japon, a chamber orchestra based in Mexico City. In addition to performing with Kansas City Symphony, she performs solo recitals, chamber music and maintains a private teaching studio.
She has five birds (two conures and three cockatiels) who enjoy vocalizing with music!
Tomoko Iguchi was born in Tokyo, Japan. At the age of seven, Tomoko began taking violin lessons from Yuriko Kuronuma in Mexico City while her family lived there. After her family returned to Japan, she studied at Toho High School of Music and Toho School of Music in Tokyo as student of Shizuko Ishii, and earned her Bachelor of Music in Violin performance.

There are so many great composers and compositions, it is so hard to pick one! I love all four symphonies by Brahms, Mahler symphonies, violin sonatas and string quartets by Beethoven. For listening at home, one of my favorite piece is the Goldberg Variations by J.S. Bach.
When I was 7 years old, my family lived in Mexico for my father’s job. My parents were looking for after school activities for me, and when my father was working at the airport, he saw a violinist walking with her violin case. That violinist turned out to be my first violin teacher soon after!
I play at the Grand Teton Music Festival in Wyoming during summer months. I love beautiful nature.
A veterinarian or a park ranger at a national park! Something related to nature and wildlife.
Before even picking up my instrument, I usually do short stretching exercises, especially for my shoulder blades. I have also studied the Alexander Technique and body mapping. Playing the violin is physically challenging, but I try to practice body movements that are as natural as possible, because I would like to continue playing for as long as I can, and in the healthiest ways.

It was not an actual concert, but our performance of the National Anthem at the 2014 World Series in Kauffman Stadium. It was a very exciting opportunity, especially because I am a baseball fan!
